Nicole Wendel

Nicole Wendel puts the main focus of her work in drawing on research of the body’s language: How can it be grasped in space, pictorially and in relation to the image itself, as a field of action? Wendel uses drawing and performance as complementary instruments of artistic work.
The large drawings of the more recent phase of her work, which Wendel calls Core-Drawings, ‘suggest a space of indeterminate depth in which an airy substance seems to spread out. It almost gives the impression that the painting is breathing. The analogy to human breathing is not accidental, for the artist’s entire work in drawing is closely related to bodily processes and actions, which she also performs as a performer, usually together with other partners’ (Ludwig Seyfarth on the occasion of the exhibition bebop, 2019).
Contrasting with these large formats are the series of (mostly) graphite drawings focused on the DIN A4 format, which have been executed with great discipline for years, and which one would spontaneously address as more meditative in terms of size, but which nevertheless, like the large works, depict a broad scale of gestural, often eminently powerful expression. Titles such as Spacenotations or OPEN CUBE: Variations of an open cube after Sol LeWitt describe those long-term work projects, which Wendel also comments on in the sense of a work diary.
